Rohtas: On the occasion of Shardiya Navratri, a unique fair is organized at Ghinhu Brahma place in Rohtas district, the sight of which makes anyone’s soul tremble. In this fair, people believe that ghosts roam around in the form of humans. Women and men who reach here are seen doing strange things. At some places a woman is seen shaking her head vigorously, while at other places a woman is lying on the ground and trying to get rid of the evil spirits. In this fair, the game of ghosts continues throughout Navratri.
Most of the people coming here belong to the poor and backward classes, who come here to find solutions to their problems. Tantrik and exorcist especially create various tricks to liberate women from evil spirits. In the fair, girls and women are beaten to drive away the shadow of ghosts. Tantriks pull their hair and beat them, so that their alleged ghostly obstruction can go away.
People who come from far away places to Ghinhu Brahma place say that by coming here their mental and physical troubles go away. Tantrik Baba removes all obstacles by performing puja. Here people’s faith and belief in Brahma Baba is unwavering.
A glimpse of the devotees’ devotion and superstition on Ghinhu Brahma can be seen. At various places in the fair, women crying and screaming with their hair open, tantrics doing exorcisms in tents, and the crowd gathering to remove the obstacles is enough to show that people are still living in superstition. There is a belief among the local people that Ghinhu Brahma has great power and by coming here all the problems go away.
In the fair, exorcists and sorcerers especially perform various rituals to liberate women from evil spirits. Only poor and backward class people are mostly seen in this fair, who come here with the hope of getting solutions to their problems. These tantrikas say that they solve people’s problems through worship and exorcism.
The clash of superstition and reality can be clearly seen in this fair. While on one hand people come to Tantriks to find solutions to their problems, on the other hand this fair also exposes the superstition prevalent in the society. The rituals and exorcisms performed by Tantrikas show how people’s emotions and beliefs are played with by resorting to superstition.
