Sushma Swaraj’s political journey began in the 1970s when she joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization. She later became associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and held various leadership positions within the party.

Swaraj was elected as a Member of Parliament multiple times. She served as an MP for the first time in 1977 and later in 1980, 1989, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2006, and 2014.
