Robert Herjavec was born into an ethnically Croatian family. In 1970, his family fled communist Yugoslavia, arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with only one suitcase and $20 in hand. Despite the challenging start, Herjavec’s family worked hard, and he eventually attended the University of Toronto, where he earned a degree in English literature and political science.

Herjavec’s entrepreneurial journey began in the 1980s. He founded BRAK Systems, a Canadian integrator of internet security software, which he sold to AT&T Canada in 2000 for $30.2 million. Following the sale, he became Vice President of Internet Security at AT&T Canada.
