Namdev was born in the village of Narasi-Bamani in Maharashtra, India, around the year 1270 CE. His family was considered low-caste, and he faced societal discrimination due to his background. From a young age, Namdev showed a deep spiritual inclination and was devoted to Lord Vithoba, a form of Lord Krishna.

Namdev’s devotion to God was unwavering, and he expressed his love and faith through devotional songs (abhangas) and hymns. He traveled extensively, visiting various pilgrimage places in India, spreading the message of love, equality, and devotion to God. His spiritual teachings emphasized the importance of true devotion, simplicity, and humility.

Namdev had a significant encounter with Sant Dnyaneshwar, another revered saint of the Bhakti movement. Dnyaneshwar initiated Namdev into the spiritual path and inspired him to continue his devotional practice.

Namdev’s devotional compositions are considered gems of the Bhakti movement. His abhangas (devotional songs) are characterized by their simplicity and deep devotion. His hymns were not limited to any particular sect or religion, and people from various backgrounds were touched by his spiritual teachings.

Namdev’s hymns were included in the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. He is one of the fifteen Bhagats (saints) whose compositions are part of the Sikh scripture. His hymns are also found in the holy scriptures of the Maharashtrian saint tradition.
