Madhukar Dattatraya Deoras, commonly known as Balasaheb Deoras, was an influential Indian political leader and the third Sarsanghchalak (Supreme Leader) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization in India. He served as the head of the RSS from 1973 until his death in 1996. Deoras was born on December 11, 1915, in Nagpur, Maharashtra, and he passed away on June 17, 1996.

Balasaheb Deoras was inspired by the RSS ideology from a young age. He joined the RSS in his youth and quickly rose through the ranks due to his dedication and leadership qualities. He became a prominent pracharak (campaigner) and played a significant role in expanding the organization’s presence.

In 1973, following the death of RSS’s second Sarsanghchalak, M.S. Golwalkar (Guruji), Balasaheb Deoras was appointed as the organization’s new leader. Under his leadership, the RSS continued to grow and became more active in various social and cultural spheres of India. He emphasized the need for Hindu unity and cultural resurgence while promoting the idea of “integral humanism.”

Deoras emphasized the importance of social service and propagated the concept of “Sarvodaya” (welfare for all). He worked to strengthen the RSS’s network of shakhas (branches) and inspired volunteers to actively participate in social and humanitarian activities.

During his tenure, Deoras maintained a delicate balance between political engagement and the RSS’s status as a non-political organization. He encouraged RSS members to participate in politics individually without directly affiliating the organization with any political party.

Balasaheb Deoras is remembered for his efforts to strengthen the organizational structure of the RSS and expand its outreach.
