Advani was born into a Hindu Sindhi family in Karachi. During the partition of India in 1947, his family migrated to India and settled in Bombay (now Mumbai). He completed his early education in Karachi and later graduated in Law from the Government Law College in Bombay.

Advani’s political career began when he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later became a member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political arm of the RSS. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament, in 1970.

After the Bharatiya Jana Sangh merged with several other parties to form the Janata Party in 1977, Advani became the Information and Broadcasting Minister in the Janata Party government. However, the Janata Party coalition collapsed, leading to the reformation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980. Advani played a crucial role in shaping the ideology and direction of the BJP.

One of the most significant events associated with Advani’s political career was the Rath Yatra (chariot procession) he led in 1990. The yatra aimed to mobilize support for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya at the site of the Babri Masjid. The movement escalated tensions between different communities and had a profound impact on Indian politics.

Advani served as the Home Minister of India from 1998 to 2004 in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led government. He was also the Deputy Prime Minister of India during this period. In 2009, he was the BJP’s candidate for the Prime Minister’s post. He continued to be a senior leader within the BJP and played a significant role in the party’s decision-making processes.

L.K. Advani is regarded as one of the key architects of the BJP’s rise to prominence in Indian politics. He is remembered for his strong conservative stance, his role in the Ayodhya movement, and his contributions to the development of the BJP.
