Dhan Singh Thapa joined the Indian Army and was commissioned into the 1st Battalion, 8th Gorkha Rifles, an infantry regiment known for its valiant service. He displayed exceptional leadership skills and unwavering dedication to his duty, which led to his rapid advancement in the military ranks.

During the 1962 Sino-Indian War, Thapa was serving as a Major in the Indian Army. He was stationed at the strategically important Rezang La pass in Ladakh, near the border with Tibet. In November 1962, the pass came under attack by the Chinese forces. Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing adverse weather conditions, Major Dhan Singh Thapa and his men bravely defended their position.

On November 18, 1962, the Battle of Rezang La took place. Major Thapa and his troops displayed exceptional valor and determination in the face of overwhelming odds. Despite being vastly outnumbered, they fought fiercely, inflicting heavy casualties on the Chinese forces. Major Thapa himself was injured multiple times but continued to inspire his men and defend the position.

Tragically, Major Dhan Singh Thapa was martyred during the battle. His unwavering courage and the sacrifices made by him and his men at Rezang La are remembered as one of the most heroic episodes in Indian military history. For his extraordinary bravery, Major Thapa was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration, in recognition of his exceptional valor and selfless service to the nation.
