Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi, commonly known as Bhimsen Joshi, was one of India’s most celebrated Hindustani classical vocalists. He was born on February 4, 1922, in Ron, British India (now in Karnataka, India), and he passed away on January 24, 2011, in Pune, India. Bhimsen Joshi was renowned for his powerful voice, incredible vocal range, and mastery of classical music.

Bhimsen Joshi was born into a musical family, and his initial training in music came from his father, Gururaj Joshi, a trained vocalist and harmonium player. His formal education in music began under the guidance of the famous musician Sawai Gandharva (Rambhau Kundgolkar). Under Gandharva’s tutelage, Joshi honed his skills and developed his unique style.
