Batukeshwar Dutt was born on November 18, 1910, in Oari village in the Purba Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. He became involved in the freedom struggle at an early age, deeply influenced by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi and other nationalist leaders.

On April 8, 1929, Dutt and Bhagat Singh, another prominent freedom fighter, threw non-lethal smoke bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi (now the Parliament of India) to protest against repressive laws. The intention was to draw attention to the unjust laws and peacefully court arrest. Dutt and Singh were arrested and subsequently tried for the bombing.

Batukeshwar Dutt, along with Bhagat Singh and other co-conspirators, was sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in the Assembly bombing. He served several years in different prisons across India during his time as a political prisoner.

After India gained independence in 1947, Dutt was released from prison along with other freedom fighters. In his later years, he lived a quiet life away from the limelight. He passed away on July 20, 1965, at the age of 54.
