Ratan Tata breathed his last on Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. His mortal remains will be kept at the National Center for Performing Arts Hall in Mumbai for the last darshan. His mortal remains will be kept at NCPA for darshan from 10 am to 3:30 pm. Mumbai Police has appealed to those who come for darshan that if there is no parking facility there then people will have to follow the instructions of the police and check their parking arrangements. Police will be fully deployed.

What is state mourning?
When state mourning is declared for a big personality after his death, his last rites are performed with full state honours. During the state funeral, the coffin containing the mortal remains of the deceased is wrapped in the tricolor. Along with this, in state mourning, as per the ‘Indian Flag Code’, the national flag is lowered to half mast. But before this, in honor of the motherland, it is raised to the top of the mast and then lowered. The ritual of gun salute is performed at the time of funeral. A public holiday is declared at the time of state mourning.

What happens in the state during this period?
When state mourning is declared in the country, the tricolor flag in the state assembly, secretariats and important offices is flown at half mast for that period. After the announcement of mourning, no government program or function is organized in the state. It is not necessary to have a public holiday during state mourning.

Who can declare state mourning?
Earlier, state mourning was announced only on the death of Prime Ministers, State Chief Ministers and Union Ministers (past or currently holding office). Now this rule has been changed. Now this honor is given to all those personalities who have worked to raise the name of the nation. Considering his stature and work, the state government takes this decision. Now this state honor is given to people who have made great contributions in all spheres of life – politics, science, literature, art, law.
