Dera Sachcha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has approved the prosecution of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in connection with the 2015 sacrilege cases. This decision has come after the recent decision of the Supreme Court, in which the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court was lifted. Now a case will be registered against Ram Rahim. This case will be conducted in cases of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
Supreme Court sought answers from Ram Rahim
On Friday, the Supreme Court lifted the stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on action against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was jailed in three sacrilege related cases in 2015. This cleared the way for running a case against Ram Rahim. A bench of Justices BR Gavai and KV Vishwanathan also issued a notice.
Know the whole matter
Earlier this March, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had stayed action against Singh in three sacrilege cases. These cases were registered after several incidents in Bargari in Faridkot district, where Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikhs, was allegedly desecrated. In December 2021, Ram Rahim moved the High Court and demanded that the three sacrilege FIRs of 2015 be investigated by the CBI. After this the High Court stayed the proceedings in the case. The cases against Ram Rahim relate to sacrilege incidents that took place in Punjab’s Faridkot district in 2015.
Police had filed FIR
On 12 October 2015, parts of the Guru Granth Sahib were found scattered in Bargari village of Faridkot and an FIR was registered under sections 295 and 120-B of the IPC at the police station Bazakhana. Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year sentence for rape and has also been convicted of murder. Ram Rahim has been coming out of jail on parole and furlough from time to time. Recently he came out of jail on parole.
