A 20-year-old student, preparing for UPSC Civil Services Exam, committed suicide by setting herself on fire in Ganjam district of Odisha. The girl had set herself on fire due to the torture of her father and stepmother. The people present at the spot somehow got him admitted to the hospital for treatment but he died during treatment on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Kukudakhandi village of Brahmapur Sadar police station area. Rani Pradhan, a final year graduation student, sprinkled petrol on herself and set herself on fire near the Panchayat Samiti office on Monday afternoon. According to acquaintances of deceased Rani Pradhan, she was a bright student and was preparing for UPSC. When Rani was 3 years old, her mother died, after which her father remarried.

Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M said that Rani had suffered 90 percent burns and was undergoing treatment at MKCG Medical Hospital, where she died. Police said preliminary investigation revealed that she took this extreme step because she was allegedly tortured by her father and stepmother. “We have detained his father for questioning. The real reason will be known only after interrogating his father and other relatives,” the SP said.

Police said that a case of unnatural death has been registered and investigation into the matter is ongoing.
