Ratan Tata: There are many things related to the personality of the country’s veteran industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, which make him different. Despite growing up in a big industrialist family, Tata learned simplicity since childhood. According to BBC, friends of Tata’s youth remember that in his early days, Ratan found his surname a burden. However, in America he felt carefree because his classmates did not know anything about his family background.
Ratan Tata had told in an interview to senior journalist Kumi Kapoor that at America’s Cornell University, he sometimes had to wash utensils to earn extra money. He tells that in those days the Reserve Bank used to allow very little foreign currency to be used for studying abroad. Tata’s father was not at all in favor of breaking the law. That’s why he did not buy dollars in black for Tata. In such a situation, it often happened that by the end of the month all the money would be exhausted. Sometimes I had to borrow money from friends. He also used to wash utensils for extra money.
Returned to India on the advice of grandmother and uncle
Ratan Tata stayed in America for seven years. He did B.Sc. Architecture from Cornell College of Architecture, Cornell University here. After this, he also had a good job and a luxurious house in Los Angeles. But then he returned to India at the insistence of his grandmother Nawazbai Tata and uncle JRD Tata.
Used to work as a laborer in Tata Steel
Senior journalist Girish Kuber writes in his book ‘The Tatas: How a Family Built a Business and a Nation’, “Ratan Tata started working at Tata Steel in Jamshedpur in the year 1962. He stayed here for six years. Initially he did his apprenticeship as a shopfloor laborer wearing blue overalls. After this he became a project manager. After this he became special assistant to Managing Director SK Nanavati. The fame of his hard work reached Bombay and JRD Tata called him to Bombay.”
