Gorakhpur: The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to encourage the cultivation of Makhana in 14 districts of Purvanchal. Makhana cultivation has started in Deoria of Gorakhpur division since last year, while Gorakhpur, Kushinagar and Maharajganj districts have been given the target of makhana cultivation in 33 hectares. The climate of these districts is like Mithila, which can prove favorable for Makhana production.
There are many blocks in Gorakhpur division where rain water gets accumulated in the fields, and these areas are ideal for Makhana cultivation. Makhana cultivation is more suitable for such places where a lot of water remains accumulated in the fields. There are sufficient number of ponds in Gorakhpur division. Also, there are many blocks where rain water remains filled in the fields for a long time in low land areas. Under this initiative of the government, arrangements have been made to give grants, which will improve the economic condition of the farmers.
Farming is being done on 5 acres in Deoria
The successful experiment of Makhana cultivation in Deoria district started this year. Deoria has become the first district of Purvanchal to start Makhana farming. This year, Makhana crop is ready in about 5 hectare area in Deoria. Whereas the target has been set to cultivate Makhana in 13 hectares in Kushinagar district and 10 hectares in Gorakhpur.
Will get subsidy of Rs 40 thousand
The government will provide a grant of Rs 40 thousand per hectare, which will cover 40% of the farmers’ costs. Cultivation of one hectare of Makhana costs about one lakh rupees, and the production is expected to be 25-29 quintals. Makhana, rich in nutrients, is being considered a superfood. Due to its increasing health benefits, its demand has increased significantly after Corona.
