Pintu Painter, resident of Mahalai Tola of Jaswantnagar, Etawah, is an artist who has been working on making a giant effigy of Ravana for years. Pintu’s father also used to make the effigy of Ravana and after his demise, Pintu has now taken this responsibility on his shoulders. Making an effigy of Ravana in the International Maidan Ramlila organized in Etawah is an old tradition and Pintu performs this task with full devotion and dedication.
Tears flow on the killing of the effigy
Pintu Painter prepares a magnificent effigy of Ravana with hard work of about one and a half month. After preparing the effigy, he feels very happy because people appreciate his art. But on the day Ravana is killed, Pintu does not go to Ramlila nor does he come in front of Ravana. He becomes emotional and sheds tears after seeing his creation being murdered at his home. He says that he makes the effigy of Ravana with great care, but within a few moments people destroy it in a jiffy.

Ravana’s effigy is made in a unique way
It takes about one and a half month for Pintu Painter to make the effigy of Ravana. This effigy is made from bamboo, black cloth, black paper and other decorative materials. This year, the effigy of Ravana has been made 2 feet taller than last year, which is 15 feet tall. Four big mirrors have been placed on either side of the effigy, and the face is in a huge form in the middle. The face of a donkey is also placed above Ravana’s head, indicating that his intellect had become corrupt during the abduction of Sita.
Ravana’s aarti and thirteenth day tradition
In Jaswantnagar, the effigy of Ravana is not burnt, rather an Aarti is performed and it is brought down by beating it with stones and sticks. After this, people take the wooden pieces of his effigy to their homes. There is a local belief that keeping these woods in the house brings wisdom and increases wealth.
