Varanasi: The great festival of Dhanteras is celebrated before Diwali. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Lord Kuber are worshipped. Apart from this, there is also a religious tradition of worshiping Lord Dhanvantari on this day, which helps in attaining health. Every year the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated on the Trayodashi date of Kartik Krishna Paksha. This year this festival will be celebrated on 29 October. Diwali is celebrated on the second day of this festival.

Apart from gold and silver, there are some things which you can buy on Dhanteras. Kashi’s astrologer Swami Kanhaiya Maharaj told that buying a broom on the day of Dhanteras is also very auspicious. On this day, one must buy a new broom from the market and bring it home. Broom is considered to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi, hence one should never step on it by mistake. If you step on a broom, you should immediately apologize to Goddess Lakshmi for this.

According to religious beliefs, if you buy a broom and bring it home on the day of Dhanteras, then Goddess Lakshmi resides in your house and you are showered with the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi throughout the year.

Swami Kanhaiya Maharaj told that this time on Dhanteras, the most auspicious time for worship is 1 hour 55 minutes. This Muhurta will start from 6:30 pm on October 29, which will last till 8:15 pm. During this time, special blessings of Goddess Lakshmi will be showered on the devotees through worship.
