Almora: Almora, the cultural city of Uttarakhand, is famous for its historical, cultural and tourist importance as well as its art class. Dussehra of Almora is famous not only in Uttarakhand but also in the country and abroad, because the effigies of Ravana family made here are prepared with great effort by local artists. It has been more than 100 years since the effigy of Ravana was built in Lal Bazaar. In this, along with young artists, big artists also participate and work hard day and night.
History of Ravana’s effigy
Local people say that an effigy of Ravana was made for the first time in Almora around the year 1902. From then till now the effigy of Ravana is being made. For this, the youth start preparing about a month in advance. Earlier, the effigy of Ravana used to be 22 feet tall, but gradually 14 feet or even more effigy is being made. You also get to see craft work in the making of mannequins in which you will get to see a lot of detail.
Navadurga is incarnated in the rock here, the temple was discovered by a British officer.
Contribution of senior and young artists
Senior artist Kishan Gururani told Local 18 that he is 70 years old and he has been watching the Ravana effigy being made since childhood and has been making it. Now the young generation is coming forward and working in this. Young artist Arjun Bisht told that the effigy of Ravana was first made in Almora, after which gradually the effigies of other families of Ravana also started being made. At present 15 to 20 effigies are made.
Vijayadashami procession
On the day of Vijayadashami, a procession of effigies of Ravana family is taken out in the entire city in Almora, to see which a large number of people are present.
