Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University of UP is one of the major central universities of India, located in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh. Aligarh Muslim University is a residential educational institution, which received a MiG fighter aircraft from the Air Force as a gift in 2009. At present, the MiG fighter aircraft of the Air Force kept in AMU remains a source of knowledge for the students here. Besides, it is also a center of attraction for the people coming here.

History of aircraft acquisition
Indian Air Force had gifted fighter aircraft MIG-23 BN to AMU administration in 2009. The then Principal of Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology of the University, Prof. The Muslim Taj was received by Muhammad. The plane took its last flight on March 6, 2009. It remained included in the Air Force fleet for 28 years. Later, after removing some of its parts, the Air Force kept it in the AMU campus itself.

The most famous history of MIG-23 BN has been of ‘Operation Safed Sagar’. ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ was launched on May 25, 1999. Under which the Air Force had to take aggressive action with first light in the morning. Its responsibility was handed over to MiG-23BN. The objective of the MiG-23BN was to drop 57 mm rockets and bombs weighing 500 kg on enemy positions on Tiger Hill. During the 7 weeks between 26 May and 15 July, the squadron flew 155 attack sorties, which was more than the number of attack sorties flown during December 1971.
