New Delhi. Famous businessman and former chairman of Tata Group Ratan Tata died on Wednesday (October 9) night at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai at the age of 86. He was also a great philanthropist. Under the leadership of Ratan Tata, the group’s revenue crossed 100 billion dollars, but he never joined the list of the rich. He made many investments ranging from tech startups to starting an EV company and an NBFC.
According to the Hurun India Rich List 2024 released in August, Ratan Tata has been ranked 350th among the richest people in India, with a net worth of Rs 7,900 crore.
Stake in Tata Sons
Ratan Tata has a small direct stake of 0.83 percent in Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group. Most of his net worth comes from this stake.
Majority of investments through RNT Associates
Since 2014, Tata has invested in at least 25 companies. These include ride-hailing platform Ola, digital payment company Paytm, furniture e-tailer Urban Ladder, eyewear retailer Lenskart, health and fitness platform Curefit, home service provider Urban Company etc. Most of these investments have been made through his personal investment vehicle RNT Associates Private Limited. He has made his startup investments in India and abroad through this vehicle.
Noel Tata can be the successor
Noel Tata’s name comes among the possible successors of Ratan Tata. Noel Tata is the half brother of Ratan Tata. Noel Tata’s role in Tata Trusts has increased in the last few years. Currently he is a trustee of both Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Noel’s increasing role in the functioning of these two trusts means that in future he may take control of Tata Trusts.
