Ratan Tata: Veteran industrialist and honorary chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata was not only a successful businessman but also the biggest philanthropist. He took the degree of B.Sc. Architecture from Cornell College of Architecture and Planning, America’s famous Cornell University. After which he worked for some time with Jones & Emmons in Los Angeles. After this he returned to India in the year 1962.

Tata had shared an anecdote during an interview. Which was such that he got a job in IBM. But his uncle mentor JRD Tata was not happy with this decision. He asked Ratan Tata to share his biodata and work in Tata Group. But Tata did not have any resume.

Ratan Tata made his first resume like this

Ratan Tata had told in one of his interviews that he had returned to India from America in 1962 after knowing about the deteriorating health of his grandmother and now the time had come for him to take responsibilities. After coming to India, he got a job offer in IBM. Ratan Tata further explains, “JRD Tata called me one day and said that you cannot work for IBM while staying in India. I was in the IBM office at that time and I remember they asked for my resume, which I did not have. There were electronic typewriters in the office, so I sat down one evening and typed the resume and sent it to JRD Tata. In this way he got his first job in Tata Group.

Got my first job in Tata Industries

After sending the resume to JRD Tata, Ratan Tata got his first job in Tata Industries, the promoter company of Tata Group. He then spent six months at Telco (now Tata Motors) before joining TISCO (now Tata Steel) in 1963. In this way, doors of opportunities opened for Ratan Tata and he took the Tata Group to new heights.

Apprentice in Jamshedpur Steel Factory

According to reports, Ratan Tata started his work in Tata Group from Jamshedpur Steel Factory. He stayed here for six years. Initially, he did his apprenticeship as a shopfloor worker wearing blue overalls.
