The series of ‘double engine’ government in Haryana started from 1999.This tradition has been continuing in Haryana for the last two and a half decades. This time also the people of Haryana have chosen the double engine government.
New Delhi. Haryana Assembly Elections 2024 results have almost been declared. Till now BJP seems to be getting 48 seats. At the same time, Congress seems to be limited to 37 seats. In this election, one trend has been broken and one tradition has remained intact. Before now, the people of Haryana had not given a chance to any party to form the government for three consecutive times. But, this time this trend has broken and BJP is going to form the government for the third consecutive time. But, the people of Haryana have maintained a tradition. That is ‘double engine government’. For the last 25 years, the people of Haryana have been handing over power to the same party which is in power at the Centre. This trend has continued this time also.
Haryana has been enjoying ‘double engine’ government, but in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the ruling BJP in Haryana suffered a major setback and the Congress-AAP alliance snatched five Lok Sabha seats from it. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP had registered a clean sweep and won all 10 seats. The increased seats and vote share of Congress has raised the question whether the people of Haryana will continue the tradition of ‘double engine government’ that has been going on for two and a half decades in the assembly elections in 2024 or will the trend change after this? But, Haryana kept this tradition intact.

The series started from 1999
The series of ‘double engine’ government in Haryana started in 1999, when INLD’s Omprakash Chautala formed the government in the state with the BJP after the Bansi Lal government. At that time, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) contested the Lok Sabha elections in alliance and won all 10 seats. A year later, in the Haryana Assembly elections held in 2000, BJP and INLD contested together and formed the government with an overwhelming majority by winning 53 out of 90 seats. Congress got only 21 seats.
Congress returned to power in 2005
In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-led UPA government was formed at the Centre. In Haryana, Congress won 9 Lok Sabha seats, while BJP could win only one seat. After this, Congress registered a resounding victory in the 2005 Haryana Assembly elections and won an overwhelming majority with 67 seats. After this victory, Bhupendra Singh Hooda became the Chief Minister of Haryana for the first time.
The tradition continued in 2009 also
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, UPA once again came to power and in Haryana, Congress won 9 seats, while Haryana Janhit Congress got one seat. Assembly elections were held in 2010, in which Congress could not achieve absolute majority. However, Bhupendra Singh Hooda once again formed the government with the support of independent MLAs.
Change of power in 2014: rise of BJP
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi got a huge majority and he became the Prime Minister. In Haryana also, BJP got 7 Lok Sabha seats, while Congress could win only one seat. After this, the people of Haryana handed over power to BJP with full majority in the assembly elections. BJP formed the government by winning 47 seats and Manohar Lal Khattar became the Chief Minister of Haryana.
History repeated itself in 2019
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP once again won with the NDA alliance at the Centre. BJP captured all 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana. In the subsequent assembly elections, BJP emerged as the largest party with 40 seats, although it fell short of a complete majority. With the support of JJP and independents, BJP once again formed the government and Manohar Lal Khattar became the Chief Minister for the second consecutive time. Thus, once again the same party which was running the government at the Center came to power in Haryana.
