MumbaiSanjay Leela Bhansali was given the first break in Bollywood by Vidhu Vinodh Chopra. Bhansali himself revealed that he had entered Bollywood as an assistant director with Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He worked with him for eight years. However, it was not so easy to get a place in Chopra’s team. Bhansali told that it was because of Vidhu’s first wife that he got the job.
In an interview given to Hollywood Reporter India, Bhansali revealed, ‘It was impossible for me to enter the film world. How did a boy living near Bhindi market reach here? That boy could never speak well. He had no friends. But still the destination was achieved.. Bhansali told that his sister Bela Sehgal helped a lot. It was only because of him that he reached Vidhu’s office.
He further said, ‘My sister Vidhu used to work with Vinod Chopra. He praised my work to his wife Renu Chopra. It was Renu who forced Vidhu to take me in his team. Vinod Chopra came to me and rejected me in his own style. Then they accepted me and I worked with them for 8 years. After working with them for 8 years, you can face any challenge in the world. Even today, if Vinod Chopra calls, I stand up. This is my gratitude to the person who changed my life.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali worked with Vidhu Vinod Chopra in many films, including 1942: A Love Story. He was given the credit of co-writer of this film. Bhansali was the assistant director in Parinda. Both were to work in the film Qarib in 1998 but it is said that there was a rift between the two. Then Bhansali refused to direct the film. Bhansali made many films which gave him a new identity. He proved his talent in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Blam, Saawariya and Hiramandi. Currently he is working on Love and War.
