To further advance scientific research, Asia’s largest imaging telescope has been inaugurated in Ladakh. The name of this telescope is Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE). Let us tell you that Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of DAE i.e. Department of Atomic Energy, inaugurated Asia’s largest imaging Cherenkov telescope in Hanle, Ladakh. With the help of this telescope, there will be further progress in scientific research. The telescope has been built by Mumbai-based BARC with the help of Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) and other Indian industry partners and is indigenously built.

Why is this telescope being discussed?

Let us tell you that this telescope is being discussed since its inauguration. Located at an altitude of 4,300 meters, it is the tallest telescope of its kind in the world which will now promote scientific research. DAE Secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty said, ‘The MACE Observatory is a major achievement for India and puts the country at the forefront of cosmic-ray research globally.’ He further said that, the telescope will allow scientists to study high-energy gamma rays thereby paving the way for a deeper understanding of the most energetic events in the universe. The MACE project plays an important role in not only pursuing scientific research but also supporting the socio-economic development of Ladakh.

Inauguration took place on 4 October

The inauguration of the MACE Observatory was a part of DAE’s Platinum Jubilee Year Programme. On October 4, Dr. Ajit Kumar Mohanty inaugurated the Major Atmospheric Cherenkov Experiment (MACE) observatory in Hanle, Ladakh. After its inauguration, he also praised all the efforts that made the MACE telescope successful.
