A recent research has revealed that the cases of oral cancer in India are highest in South Asia and the main reason for this is tobacco. A study by the International Cancer Research Agency (IARC) has revealed that out of the total 3,89,800 oral cancer cases in the world in 2022, 1,20,200 cases were caused by the consumption of smokeless tobacco and betel nut. A large number of people in the world are falling prey to cancer due to eating pan masala, gutkha, khaini and betel nuts.

This study published in ‘The Lancet Oncology’ journal According to , in the year 2022, 1,20,200 oral cancer cases worldwide were caused by tobacco and smokeless tobacco products, out of which 83,400 cases were in India. All these cases were caused by smokeless tobacco and betel nut. This study shows how dangerous the habit of chewing tobacco is proving to be for Indians and how serious it is causing harm to health. Scary figures have emerged in this study. According to the research scientists, if these tobacco products are not used, then the cases of cancer can be reduced.

These things are the biggest causes of oral cancer

The study also states that The biggest causes of oral cancer cases in women are betel nut (30%) and tobacco-based pan spices (28%). After this comes Gutkha (21%) and Khaini (21%). Talking about men, the biggest causes of oral cancer are Khaini (47%), Gutkha (43%), Pan Masala with tobacco (33%) and Betel nut (32%). Scientists say that smokeless tobacco and betel nut can cause many diseases including oral cancer. If the use of these products is stopped, about 31% of oral cancer cases in the world can be avoided.

The condition of low and middle income countries is bad

According to this study, more than 95% of oral cancer cases have been found in low and middle income countries. Among these, India is at number one and highest number of cases of oral cancer have been reported here. After India comes Bangladesh, Pakistan, China, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. This shows that health-related problems in these countries need to be taken seriously. IARC experts say that there has been some improvement in smoking control in these countries, but concrete steps have not been taken regarding smokeless tobacco.
