Shashank Shekhar/ Jehanabad: As soon as the winter season begins, the time for sowing Rabi crops has come. Preparations for sowing of wheat, pulses and oilseeds are in full swing. In such a situation, seed treatment is an important process for farmers, adopting which will not only increase the yield but will also protect the crops from diseases and pests.
Seed treatment will increase yield and provide protection from pests
Emphasizing the importance of seed treatment, Dr. Wajid Hasan, entomologist of Agricultural Science Center, Gandhar, said that in Rabi season, seed treatment is very important for wheat, mustard and especially pulse crops like lentil, gram, sesame and pea. Seed treatment not only makes the crop disease free but also increases the yield. According to Dr. Hasan, proper seed treatment reduces the attack of fungus and insects on the crop.
Correct method of seed treatment
Explaining the method of seed treatment, Dr. Wajid Hasan said that before seed treatment, the seeds of lentils or other pulse crops should be spread on the open terrace in dew overnight. Start treating the seeds by collecting them in the morning and placing them in a container with a lid (pot, drum or bucket).
Seed treatment with fungicide (FIR)
Treat the seeds with fungicide of carboxin group. Take Vita Wax Power available in the market at the rate of 2.5-3 grams per kg of seeds and mix it well with the seeds. Keep it in a container and run it for 20 meters, so that a layer of medicine is formed on the seeds.
seed treatment with insecticide
After fungicide, treat the seeds with insecticide. For this use imidicloprid or thiomethoxam. Mix this also in the seeds at the rate of 1 gram per kg of seeds.
Seed treatment with rhizobium
Finally, use Rhizobium, which is very beneficial for pulse crops. Use rhizobium trifolia for lentil seeds. Mix 100 grams of Rhizobium in jaggery solution and apply it on the seeds. This will form a protective layer over the seed and it will be ready for sowing.
Benefits of seed treatment
Seed treatment protects against fungus and pests in the initial days of harvest. If the seeds are protected with fungicides, the fungus is unable to enter the seeds and with insecticides, the seeds remain protected from insects for 30-35 days. At the same time, due to Rhizobium, there is proper management of nitrogen in pulse crops, due to which there is no need of urea.
Disadvantages of not treating seeds
If seed treatment is not done, fungus can damage up to 10-15 percent of the seeds, due to which the problem of drying up may be seen in the crop. According to experts, without seed treatment, crop yield reduces and the crop becomes more sensitive to diseases and pests. Farmers can improve their yields by adopting this simple and effective process of seed treatment.
