Canada Work Visa : It will no longer be easy for Indian students to get a job after studying in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has changed the rules for Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The new rules will come into effect from November 1, 2024. The government has set new criteria for post study work permit. These rules have been made by the Government of Canada to deal with the shortage of workers in specific industries.
The Government of Canada also wants to ensure that students have knowledge of French along with English language. International students who want to work in Canada after graduation will now have to fulfill the new conditions for post study work permit. The new rules have been made very strict, due to which difficulties are going to increase for international students, especially Indians.
Will have to pass language test for work permit
The most prominent among the new rules for post study work visa is the language proficiency test. Students seeking jobs after completing graduation will now have to prove proficiency in English or French. For English, students will have to pass any one test among CELPIP, IELTS and PTE. Whereas for French language one will have to give either TEF Canada or TCF Canada test. Bachelor, Master or Doctoral students must achieve the Canadian Language Benchmark Level 7 in four competencies: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Application rules for post study work permit also changed
After completing their studies in Canada, international students have 180 days to apply for a work permit. However, if a student wants to work before getting PGWP, he will have to obtain a valid permit. During the application, the student will have to show his degree, diploma, official transcript or letter of completion received from the institute.
According to the new rule, graduates will no longer be able to apply for post graduate work permit at the port of entry. This now requires online submissions from within Canada or abroad. Also, those who want to work in a sector where medical test is required will have to opt for the medical exam 90 days before applying for a work permit.
