Beirut. The United Nations has warned that we will see the same devastation seen in Gaza in Lebanon and if we do not want this to happen then there is a need to stop this war immediately. Matthew Hollingworth, Lebanon director of the UN World Food Program (WFP), said, “We have to do everything possible to prevent this from happening.” The Israeli army is continuously attacking Hezbollah positions in Lebanon. He has said that he will not stop until he destroys all the bases of Hezbollah.
Speaking to journalists in Geneva from Beirut, he said he had spent the first six months of this year coordinating WFP’s operations in Gaza before taking charge of the Lebanon office, and was troubled by conditions there. He said, “From the time I wake up till I go to sleep, it remains in my mind that we could go into a similar era of destruction… We should not let this happen.” Israel’s bombing of Lebanon has killed more than 1,100 people and displaced more than a million in less than two weeks.
James Elder, a spokesman for the UN children’s agency UNICEF, warned that “unfortunately the parallels are stark, whether it’s displacement on the ground, the impact on children or the language used…” Jeremy Lawrence said, “We are seeing the same pattern that we saw in Gaza. The devastation to all people in Lebanon is beyond belief, as it is in Gaza. “We can’t let this happen again.”
Israel has intensified bombing in northern Gaza and southern Beirut, increasing the scope of the war against Iran-backed terrorist groups. Israel is still fighting Hamas almost a year after its attack on October 7 and has opened a new front against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Thousands of people, including Palestinian refugees, continue to flee Lebanon due to the escalating conflict in the region, while rallies were held around the world to mark one year since the start of the war in Gaza. Israel has killed many Hamas officials in Lebanon since the start of the war with Hamas.
