Shravan Kumar/ Gopalganj: The joy of Navratri is spread across the country and meanwhile, the famous Devi temple of Lachhwar village of Gopalganj district of Bihar is in the headlines due to its unique traditions. Here during Navratri, a “court” of ghosts is held, where by the grace of Mother Durga, people get freedom from ghosts. This temple is famous for its beliefs not only in Bihar, but throughout India.
One gets freedom from ghosts from Bamat Devi.
The place of Bamat Devi located in the temple complex is especially for those who are suffering from ghosts. Devotees who come here present their problems before Bamat Devi and the effects of ghosts become visible on their bodies. After this, by the grace of Mother Durga, these ghost spirits are punished and the victim gets freedom. At the same time, devotees come to the court of Mahamai in the main temple to wish for happiness and prosperity and it is believed that their wishes are fulfilled.
This temple is located 12 kilometers away from Gopalganj.
This temple is located in Lachhwar village of Thawe block, about 12 kilometers south of Gopalganj district headquarters. The location of this temple is in the eastern direction, at a distance of only 1200 meters from the Gopalganj-Mirganj main road. Apart from Motihari, Bettiah, Chhapra, Muzaffarpur of Bihar, people from Uttar Pradesh and Nepal also come here to get rid of ghosts.
Huge crowd gathers during Navratri
Special crowd is seen in this temple during Navratri. The crowd is more than usual on Friday and Monday, whereas thousands of devotees come here on Purnima and Amavasya days. More than 10 thousand devotees reach here during Sharadiya and Chaitra Navratri. Devotees from far off places stay here for nine days with accommodation and wish to get solutions to their problems from the Mother Goddess. This year the administration has made special arrangements for security.
The fair has been going on for two hundred years
Local people say that this fair is being organized for the last 200 years. This temple became more famous with time due to the spread of rumors that the wishes of the devotees coming to the temple were fulfilled. Today this place is especially popular among the devotees of Bihar, UP and Nepal.
Superstition or faith?
However, even in this era of modern science, beliefs and superstitions related to ghosts are deeply ingrained in the society. While on one hand some people take wrong advantage of this superstition, on the other hand devotees who have faith in the temple consider it the center of their devotion. This tradition has been going on for years and even today it maintains its deep hold in the society.
