Etawah: Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh is known for potato production, but this time’s heavy rains have badly affected the potato crop. Due to the torrential rains in September, there is a lot of delay in sowing of potatoes, due to which the prices of potatoes are expected to increase significantly in the new season.

Potato sowing delayed due to record breaking rain
The amount of rainfall that Etawah received this time in the month of September had never happened before. Due to heavy rains the fields were flooded, due to which sowing of potatoes was not possible. Normally it rains in Etawah only till 15th September, but this year record breaking rainfall was recorded. According to the data of the Agriculture Department, there was almost 300% more rainfall in a day, which has made life difficult.

According to the Agriculture Department, Etawah has received three times more rainfall than the normal rainfall. Normally there should have been 88.04 mm rainfall on September 18, but this time 264.04 mm rainfall occurred. This is 299.04% more than the prescribed standard. In the year 2023, there was 510.07 mm rainfall on September 18, whereas this year it was 602.03 mm, which is 110.02% more than normal.

Possibility of increase in prices
Deputy Director of Agriculture Department of Etawah, R.N. Singh told Local 18 that the rains continued even after September 15 this year, due to which there is heavy moisture in the fields. Due to this, sowing of potatoes is getting delayed. When potato comes in the open market next year, its prices are likely to increase.

Crops badly affected by rain
This year’s heavy rains in Etawah district have affected not only potatoes but also other crops. Due to the lag in potato crop, farmers are worried that it will directly affect the prices of potatoes in the market.
