Asbestos is a mineral that poses little risk to humans when left untouched, but when it expands and is released into the atmosphere, it is highly carcinogenic. Asbestos is present in most of the buildings in Gaza.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, in the last one year, due to Israeli bombs, a large amount of asbestos broke into small pieces and went into the particles present in the air. Which can cause cancer in those who inhale it. Due to which experts say that cases of lung cancer in Gaza are likely to be reported for the next several decades. According to United Nations estimates, about 800,000 tons of asbestos from the debris destroyed by the bombing in Gaza could contaminate the air.

More deaths from asbestos than from attacks
Leading asbestos expert Roger Wiley told Al Jazeera that it is a ‘death sentence’ for Palestinians trapped in Gaza. This is a tragedy that will unfold in times to come. Wiley said the exposure of trapped people to asbestos after each Israeli bombing could be compared to the September 11, 2001, collapse of the World Trade Center in New York City. Years later, it became clear that the dust clouds contained toxic chemicals, including asbestos. “I predicted in 2001 that more people would die from asbestos-related diseases than died in the September 11 attacks,” Wiley said.

According to the World Trade Center Health Program, 4,343 survivors and first responders have died from asbestos-related diseases since the attack. Whereas on September 11, 2,974 people were killed. Willy further said that exactly the same thing is going to happen in Gaza. Wiley said the concentration of asbestos in the air would be very high, and it would guarantee mesothelioma cancer. He told that cancer usually forms in the layer around the lungs or stomach.

Asbestos ubiquitous in refugee camps
